Evangelina´s story

I am Evangelina Vazquez. I am Mexican and trained as a physicist and specialised in biological materials. Until the day my son was born I was completely dedicated to science. During my graduate studies, my only child, Uriel, suffered brain damage due to acute fetal distress and Kernicterus

During pregnancy and childbirth I was not cared for correctly. I was in childbirth for 3 days, after which the healthcare workers did not acknowledge the levels of bilirubin in Uriel, which can cause Kernicterus. His condition was worsened by the sepsis he had acquired through premature membrane rupture.

His experience has motivated me to share the learning from his story and work in partnership with the healthcare system to ensure that others do not have to suffer as we have done
