Procalcitonin is a hormone synthesized in the neuroendocrine cells of the thyroid gland, and it is a precursor for calcitonin, the hormone that helps to control the level of serum calcium. In the last years its role as a serum marker to monitor the evolution of a bacterial infection has been confirmed, but other situations can increase the value.
