Are patients lost inside the ICUs?

Intensive Care Units (ICUs) are a cornerstone in modern medicine to save lives, but a patient can be lost and very affraid inside them..

The sense of time and space is lost inside the ICU. But also a lot of family connections and personal rutines are challenged. Many important and dangerous decisions have to be taken without a real participation of the patient because of his or her mental status or drugs, but many times because the urgency of the  problem like a surgical vital intervention.

Patients don,t remember most of the scenarios inside the ICU, but others have a vivid memory. This group of patients, the ones in an alert status, need a psychological support and a person to trust and for intermediation with doctors. Memories from an ICU stay can be a nightmare for a group of patients.
